The Communication Studio is a mentorship program in which Graduate Students (MA) in Art History in the Department of Art & Art History at Hunter College offer mentoring assistance to undergraduate students and their art history papers. Students enrolled in any art history undergraduate course may visit the Communication Studio for help with their papers. In addition, mentors can assist with applications for internships and applications for graduate school. The mentors can help with editorial concerns and any issues related to the structure of the paper, the formal analysis of objects, establishing a thesis statement, building an argument, incorporating scholarly sources into the discussion, and more.

The mentors offer weekly virtual office hours, beginning on March 15 through May 22 (with the exception of holidays) following the schedule and zoom links below:

Sundays, 11 am–1 pm, with Kimberlean Donis

*With the exception of May 17, when her hours will be 1-3pm, 5-7pm.

The Communication Studio Presents:

Mastering the Visual Analysis Essay

Wednesday March 25, 2026, 5–7 PM

Small Critique Room, HN11104

Calling all undergraduate Art History students! Looking to improve your art history writing? Unsure of how to begin your visual analysis assignment?

Join MA Art History student mentors Bobby, Kimberlean, and Nora for a hands-on workshop on the fundamentals of visual analysis. We’ll discuss how to look closely at a work of art, identify its visual elements, and formulate an argument based on our observations. With help from our MA’s, you’ll build the skills and confidence to tackle your next art history paper and to critically engage with images—whether in a museum, in advertising, or on social media.

Food and refreshments to be served. Open to students in any undergraduate art history class.

Looking for more art history writing help? Visit the weekly virtual Communication Studio to meet one-on-one with an MA student mentor. Schedules and Zoom links are available at bit.ly/communicationstudio
